McAuliffe is an Expeditionary Learning school for grades six through eight. McAuliffe’s hands-on curriculum inspires high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. McAuliffe is a diverse community of engaged, motivated learners — students and adults alike. At McAuliffe, students take ownership of their learning, guided by creative, passionate adults who navigate the balancing act of challenge and support. The school’s supportive Crew model (10-12 scholars with an faculty advisor) reinforces a climate of physical and emotional safety. The community values independence and individuality, while practicing collaboration, inclusivity, and acceptance.

McAuliffe opened in September 2002 as the first charter middle school to serve students living in the MetroWest area. In July 2016, McAuliffe applied for the charter to be renewed through 2022. During the fall 2016 the DESE conducted a renewal inspection, which informed the renewal of the school’s charter. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) unanimously renewed the school for its 2018-2022 charter.

The Expeditionary Learning model challenges students to think critically and to take active roles in their classrooms and communities, resulting in higher achievement and greater engagement in school. EL provides schools with professional development, coaching, and on-line tools to improve curriculum design, instruction, school culture, leadership, and assessment practices. The national network of EL schools and professional colleagues includes 165 schools, 4,000 teachers, and 45,000 students.
